How to apply vinyl graphics

Following is the basic guidelines of vinyl application on smooth and flat surface.

Vinyl application is a simple but tricky procedure. You can apply your own vinyl graphics like a professional if you follow these step-by-step guidelines.

You can choose to apply vinyl in either dry or wet. Applying vinyl dry does not allow for any mistakes. Once the vinyl touches the surface, there is no removal without damage. However, applying vinyl with spray bottle of soap and water allows you the opportunity to adjust vinyl as needed for up to several minutes. This method is recommended for both beginners and experts.

Step 1: Gather your Tools

  • Masking Tape
  • Level
  • Squeegee
  • Application Spray Bottle, 12 oz. of warm water with 2 drops of dish soap, shake well
  • Exacto knife or utility knife
  • Windex Glass Cleaner

Step 2: Prepare the surface

It's critical that you clean the surface free from dirt or grease. Spray Windex or soap and water onto the surface and wipe clean with a lint-free towel.

Step 3: Register your graphics

Put a piece of masking tape on each end of your vinyl transfer in the area where you plan to apply it, level your graphics and anchor the top of your graphics to the application surface with masking tape. Now gently flip your vinyl to the other side so that it faces down with the masking tape still attached. Masking tape help keep your graphics in place.

If you decide to apply vinyl using the wet method, spray the application surface thoroughly with soap and water. It's important not to wet the paper backing or it will stick to the vinyl. Slowly remove the backing. Hold two ends of your graphics (the other side anchored with masking tape) and let the vinyl float onto the surface. After positioning, take the squeegee and work from center to the outside using back and forth motion. When this all done, allow the vinyl to set for five to ten minutes.

Step 4: Remove the masking

Start slowly from the center. Depending how much water you spray, there will be some amount of soap and water remained under the transfer tape. Remove excess water with paper towels with care since vinyl is still fresh. Vinyl should be adhere well in 24 hours.

Do and Don't

Ideally, temperature should be between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit before attempting the installation. As a general rule, vinyl adhesive becomes brittle when it is cold and gummy when it is hot. Applications outside the recommended range of 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit reduce the adhesives' ability to perform.

Do not excessively stretch vinyl during the application. This is the main cause of end lift. Pull the vinyl only as taut as necessary to keep a straight line. Because vinyl is a pressure-sensitive product, a squeegee should be used for all installations. The purpose of using a squeegee is to remove the excess fluid and or air from behind the vinyl. You should always start the squeegee from the middle and either use a straight up or downor side-to-side motion. Allow the vinyl to set for 5 to 15 minutes.

Bubbles should be punctured using a pin. Do not slit the vinyl to release the air. If the vinyl is slit it will spread or gap. The cutting or trimming of any vinyl graphic should be done using a very sharp knife and very little pressure.
